A SUBSTITUTE
Matthew 27, Mark 14:53–15:47, Luke 22:54–23:56, John 18:13-19:42
We often think of substitutes as simply being “stand-ins”. In sports, “subs” are not good enough to play all the time or they have a very specialized skill that’s only needed in certain instances. Substitute teachers often do not garner the same respect the regular teacher receives from students and maybe even colleagues.
However, Jesus was our substitute on the cross. He died and took on the punishment for sin – even though He had done nothing to deserve it. Jesus was God’s perfect man and man’s perfect God – he was the ultimate substitute. We needed a “sub”; we would never have been able to make it any other way.
WORSHIP THROUGH
MUSIC
PRAYER FOCUS
Through Jesus’ death, He gave us life. Holy Spirit, breathe life into the places that are dead in my life, that I may have a revelation of who you are.
PROGRESSIVE FAST
Same as Thursday and remove all meals – eat only bread or broth.
Children should only be doing BASELINE fast.
FAMILY FOCUS
Take a moment to share with your family why you are fasting from meals today, what it’s like to go without food, and how you feel God is meeting you as you make this sacrifice. Discuss what you read about, sharing anything in particular you feel the Holy Spirit is highlighting.
Go Deeper: Read the chapters of the Bible together as a family. Consider what Jesus did/does for us- Make a ‘Thank You’ card for Jesus - let your child lead in what they are thankful for.
